Is there supposed to be any fittings or spacers in the air cleaner box w/ the air filter?

I know it would not be any fun if it was easy, but does it have to be this much fun?

Do you think an air filter would function without 13091 and 11009?

I know it would not be any fun if it was easy, but does it have to be this much fun?

13091 - inlet pipe holder

11009 - gasket holder

Am unfamiliar with this intake system.

The general rule is that all incoming air should pass through the filter element before reaching the carbs. Otherwise there's an "air intake leak." Some models tolerate this very well without noticable difference in performance, while performance in other models may suffer because of an intake air leak.

But immediate performance considerations aside, an "air intake leak" allows foreign matter in non-filtered air to enter into the carbs, as well as pass on into the combustion chamber to accelerate wear of the rings, pistons and cylinder bore.

Should be able to study the existing system to determine whether the missing parts would allow any air into the carbs without first passing through the filter element.

If had to guess, would suspicion that absence of the mentioned parts is allowing unfiltered air to reach the carbs. In that event, perhaps some ingenuity could be used to fabricate workable substitutes or an alternate fitment.

For example, sometimes a piece cut from a standard household a/c filter may be inserted to temporarily replace the missing oem part and catch at least some of the airborne matter.

Good Luck! :)

I think this motor will tolerate an air leak rather well. The PO ran it without an air filter for over 6 months. ;)
