What should I adjust??
20 May 2008 13:48
I cleaned the carbs and now it starts much better. The problem is once fully warmed up (10 - 15 minutes) the bike runs very rough and will actually stall out when the clutch is disengaged. I also have a very strong gas smell when I stop. IF accelerating hard it will smooth out but I don't see that being a good idea in traffic to keep the engine running:S . When it does stall if I let the clutch out while moving the engine will start right up and I continue on down the road. The bike is a 550-M1.
Thanks :woohoo:

Just taking a stab at this, it sounds like you are too rich at idle. Do you have TK-22 carbs? If so, check your air screws to see how they are set. I think the factory setting should be 1 3/8 turns out from lightly seated.
First check to see how they are set now. If they are less than 1 3/8 turns, try turning them out to that setting and see if it makes a difference.

I just looked it up, and the M1 came with CV carbs, not the TK-22s, is that right?
It may still be a mixture screw setting issue, but before messing with that, have you checked your fuel service level? On the CV carbs, it should be set to 7mm +/- 1mm. If the fuel level is too high in the bowls, that could cause a rich condition which would explain the behavior you've described. Check that first, and adjust if needed.
Only after you're sure the fuel level is right should you move on to looking at the mixture screws, then jetting.

Just another thought
Are the carbs or at least one of the carbs overflowing when the bike gets running ? That would contribute to the smell of gas and give a rough idle - did with me anyway. When I had a bad float valve and overflowing carb I had exactly the same symptoms

I'm glad it works after the cleaning. I've checked the manual I have and it talks about a tube for checking the level and taking everything off again. Is there another way to do it without all that or not. Along with not being too sure of what I'm doing I'm assuming they aren't set as a group but each carb needs to be checked and set individually, correct??

I haven't seen any gas coming out just a strong smell of gas when I stop.
