Of course, it's always better to measure the fuel service level:

I recently learned the hard way that my 1976 KZ's composite floats each have different density values - setting float height was not the right way to go. The fuel level is the best.

It does not take a $75 tool. Here is one I made/used before my tool came in and it worked perfectly. I don't regret the tool - I like having the tools for each bike's care and maintenance - it's part of the hobby, but float height settings don't cut it for my KZ - I was over-flowing and sloshing fuel during idle/low speeds on 3 carbs out of 4 - all set to 26mm. None of the composite floats were set the same - each took it's own set to achieve the correct 3-4mm below the joint.

$75 tool on top
$1 home-made tool on the bottom. I took an old drain screw, drilled the hole through the head with a small bit, then took a drill bit the same size as the brass "T" fitting and drilled a hole from the head using the pilot hole when drilled from the other side, cut one barb/nipple off the T, used JB Weld to seal/hold the nipple to the drain screw (brazing or solder would work great here and not require cure time), added a 6mm flat washer to help secure the joint, and attached the scrap hose I picked-up years ago from Lowes.

Regards,
Gordon

If you've got BS34 carbs, the setting is 1 1/4 turns, according to FSM.
