Running rough was created by kztee
My 1980 KZ 750 LTD has started to run a little rough. I am starting this thread in 'Carburettor' only because that's my best guess at the problem. The bike starts fine and idles fine. During acceleration she seems to chug and cough a little until about 4k rpm then takes off. Everything else seemed fine until my ride home from work today. Cruising home it seemed to chug every now and again going down the highway. Basically it feels like its not getting enough gas. I removed the tank about a week ago and cleaned the petcock fuel filter (seemed pretty clean already). I have also ran some Seaform through her. Any ideas on where I should start? BTW - the engine is stock.

Just went out and checked the plugs. They all look good. Gapped to .032.

I hate this, but I think there might be a chance....

I believe that there is some sediment in your carbs, OR
there is some fuel restriction with your new filter.

Isn't it odd that when we mean to clean out the fuel tank, often what happens is that it kicks up some crap and sends it on down in to the carb...

Do you think this could have happened?

Some simple things to consider before the more complex.
Are there any kinks in your fuel line ? Clear fuel line can harden and kink.
Any possibility of bad gas (happened to me with exact same symptoms) ? If you have had multiple fills from different locations then probably not, but if all this is happening on the same tank of gas then might be worth considering.
When was the last time you lubed up the timing advancer which is behind the electonic ignition plate ? It might be sticking

OK, so I tried most of what y'all suggested except cleaning or rebuilding the carbs. Now, today, on the way to work I was cruising the highway around 70 MPH when I lost power. I down shifted to 4th and at nearly 7k rpm the bike struggled to stay up at 70. She limped the rest of the way to work and I was able to ride her home with intermitent power surges (mostly very little power). When I got home I could touch #2 and #3 header pipes but #1 and #4 were too hot to handle (as they should be). So, it would seem to me that I have a bad coil. How can I confirm this? And, if this turns out to be the case can I use the coils off my '77 1000 to replace the ones on the 750 (since I bought new ones for the rebuild of the 1000)? Any advise would be appreciated!

I went ahead and through on an old coil off the '77 1K and the '80 750 is running better than it has in a long time! Hope there's not going to be problems with this swap in the future as this has to continue to be my daily rider for a while yet.
