KZ440 Problem with Choke
25 Apr 2008 22:44
Hey, I have a 1981 KZ440 with right about 14k miles. The bike is running one but I have one problem that I have not yet been able to find the solution to. When I start the bike up with full choke the rpms jump up to about 7k, which seems ridiculously high; otherwise, the bike idles well at running temp. What is the normal RPM on full choke? And how do I adjust it? - Thanks Everyone -

My 750 has a manual choke, so I adjust it with the lever. Not sure what yours has? I never use full choke to start, more like 3/4 and I reduce it the moment it fires to a lower amount of choke.

I do have a manual choke, it's just that it can be hard to get a consistent idle and I was wondering if something needs to be adjusted because it revs so high at full choke. Maybe that's just normal?

You don't have a choke, you have an enrichener circuit. aberg has a choke and with his choke mechanism, it is pretty much choke on or off. The 7K is pretty high. Not sure what I would do about this issue... shouldn't initially jump up more than about 3K rpm or so.

That's what I was thinking. Does anyone have an answer to this? Is there any sort of adjustment you can make to the choke?

I don't know about the carbs you have but my 81 550LTD has TK carbs and it has a fast idle adjustment on the left side of the carb assembly. Try the link below and go to page 170 figure 31 points to the adjustment screw.
