Ball-bearing
28 Mar 2008 13:04 - 28 Mar 2008 13:04
I recently bought a 1981 kz750h. It was starting but having problems idling. After changing the plugs and air filter I was having no better results with the idle so i decided to remove the carbs and give them a cleaning. I now have two problems; the first is when I was taking the vacuum line that goes to the airbox off I noticed that there was something stuck in the hose. I worked the obstruction out and discovered that there was a small ball-bearing stuck in it. Any ideas why someone would do this? The second problem is I can't get the carbs back on the bike. Any tips on putting them back on would be appreciated.

I find a little wd40 on the rubber boots makes them slide on much easier.

WD40 is okay, or Armoral, silicon spray, or similar product.
On the large fours, once the throttle cables are attached and the carbs started into the carb holders, I use a wooden vampire stake, broom handle or similar "tool" to lever the carbs on into the holders. And the carbs readily slide snugly right into place without drama.
Good Luck!

Thanks for the tips. No one knows anything about the ball bearing. I have talked to mechanics and no one seems to know any positive reasons as to why a ball-bearing would be obstructing a vacuum line. I guess I will see if it makes a difference when I get the carbs back on the bike.

A ball bearing or marble is used to quickly and elegantly plug a vacuum line that you no longer want to work. It also allows you to plug the port it's connected to without a plug or cap.
