Worn throttle slide
24 Mar 2008 20:25
I've been having all sorts of issues with my bike. Mostly hard start and erratic idle. So I rebuilt the carbs and changed the plugs to no avail. While I had the carbs apart I noticed several worn spots on a couple of the slides what kind of issues can this cause if any at all?

If they are Mikunis and it is just slight scuffing it shouldn't be a problem at all. If it is really nasty and worn so the slide moved around it the bore it could eventually cause excessive wear in the needle and jet but that would be unlikely. The only other problem that I can think of,, still figuring them as Mikunis would be if the cover gasket on the carb or the shaft seals that seal the pivot shaft are too loose, that could cause an air leak around the slide making the mixture lean. But in my mind that is also unlikely, but possible.
Just my thoughts on the matter.

I don't remember what carbs they are I will check when I get home. I forgot to mention that the bike is an 81 KZ550 LTD. If that helps.

I think the worst about the scuffing is that you will know it is there and it will bother you, but no one else will ever be able to tell. Barring them yanking your carbs apart.
