KZ650 cold start was created by shakyone
I have a KZ650 LTD that I have rebuilt the carbs on a while ago. The issue I am having is with 50 degree starts. With full "choke" the bike starts and idles, but will die if I give it any throttle before it has run for a few minutes. Then it seems to "catch" and all is fine-just as if I flipped a switch. Other than the cold starting issue the bike runs great. I would appreciate any comments.
Thanks!
Paul

Nates vintage bike axiom: Riding is the reward for time spent wrenching.
Murphys corollary: Wrenching is the result of time spent riding.

Fairly normal I'd say. These bikes had become notoriously cold blooded due to emissions laws in the late '70s. Once they warm up they're fine. I typically don't touch the throttle but feather the choke lever to keep the RPM below 2k or so.
You're just learning the character of your bike.

650's are just cold blooded beasts. I've owned one since 77 and that's the way they are. Hopping mine up actually made it a bit easier to get going cold. Go figure.

I've owned mine since new (April '77). What you're descibing is normal. Ed

Bought mine new also, but I will say that installing the Dyna S made it start within one revolution as opposed to cranking for a couple seconds!

Bought my 78 in the fall of 81. It was stock with the exception of the seat. since then I have made a few upgrades. Its been re-painted, seat re-covered, yosh pipe, K/N filters, re-jetted. Clutch was massaged, accel coils and wires, dyna ignition and a 1/4 fairing just for extended trips.

have been starting my 650 in all kinds of weather for the last 27 years. Allways been cold blooded. Last year I added accel coils and dyna ignition, it starts faster and warms up quicker. Money well spent, should have done it years sooner.
