Selecting Carb Size - Mikuni RS was created by 79MKII
After looking at Mikuni's carb settings chart, it seems that the minimum size carb for a KZ1000 having pods and a header should be 36mm. My bike ran well with 33mm smoothbores, so I'm not sure that I need carbs so big. The chart actually calls out for 38mm carbs with the mods I have (1260cc, big valves, big cams, etc...).

I was thinking that 34's would be good, but this chart says the 34's should go on a KZ750 with nothing more done to it other than pods and a header. Does this sound right? It seems to me they are estimating on the large side. My 1000 only came stock with 28's. I plan on mostly street riding with the occasional trip to the drag strip. What do you guys think??

Image is hard to read but it won't download if it's any bigger, sorry. Here's a direct link (I hope!)

The guy who ported my head and sold me the parts for my 1428cc project recommended 38mm carbs for me. I could have used 40mm but I don't have all out porting done or a J head.

If you plan on running on the street go with 36mm. They'll keep the intake velocity up and provide with better throttle response.

APE Jay would be a good guy to e-mail and ask.

my engine builder runs 36s on his 1385 and it is way more than most people want to play with,i think they size that scale more towards dragracing with the thottle pinned to the stop! :P id say 34s are plenty ;)

Still recovering, some days are better than others.

Well, I emailed several of the places that sell the carbs and asked for their recommendations. Most seem to think the 34's are the best for the street. A couple think the 36's would be fine on the street too and have a little more top end HP. Most seem to agree that the throttle response and tuning will be easier on the 34's, but I did have one place tell me the 36's would be easier than the 34's to set up down low??

Bottom line, I ordered a set of 34's and they're on their way!!:woohoo: :woohoo:

I have a beautiful set of 38's on the bike now, but I talked myself out of using them. They'd probably be fine for the drag strip, but not so great on the street. I've had 33 smoothies on there for the last 20 years and those never gave me a problem, so the 34 flatslides should be even better.

Thanks for the input!
