i thought i heard somewere that you can run a z1 900 with a 4 into 1 pipe and pods and not have to re jet the carbs. I dunno if this is true, but was wondering if someone can chime in. As of right now it has the stock airbox and a 4 into 1 v&h pipe( thanks GregZ) with the stock jetting, and she runs like a dream, no flat spots anywere. And plugs look good, I dunno if adding pods will make me have to re jet? Thanks

You will have to rejet due to more air causing a lean condition. You might think about getting a K@N filter for your box. You might have to go up a size with the K@N and exhaust. It seems that all bikes are different when it comes to this so you will have to check it as it goes.

I may be old and slow but I don't get it: if it runs perfect now, why screw with pods? Everything I read about them says they are impossible to tune in 100% and basically give you an eternal hobby trying to get them to run right.

I agree with bountyhunter, not a big pod fan (other than EASY carb removel) for various reasons. If the bike runs great with stock jetting then you are getting no benifits from the pipe other than sound, or somewhere down the line the PO changed jets and you don't have stock jetting. Other possibility is that if you have stock jetting, float levels could be too high or internal leakage and carbs are getting extra fuel?

maybe not. I remember when I bought my discount "Kerker clone" for my 750 twin way back in 1982. Still had the stock jets, and the bike ran stronger immediately. More power in the main band (3K to 6K) and noticably quicker with less throttle opening. Loved the performance of that sucker, ran it 25 years.... but it was very loud and made my ears ring and blocked the drain plug and center stand. Ran good, though.... ran a little better with the next larger size jets, but still ran better than stock with the stock jets.

If your spark plugs are white i'd go up one size to keep the motor cool in hot weather.
