I have seen lots of pictures of old kz's with no air box, just air filters coming out of the carb intake holes. Is it possible to convert my kz440 to this style of air filter?

I think you are talking about PODs and you should be able to find some to fit your bike

Measure the outside diameter of the carb inlets and go to K&N's website or brouse ebay.
