Mercury is getting hard if not impossible to find.
As a matter of fact, those evironmentally flourescent bulb that everyone is pushing, the curly things, contain mercury vapor as all flourescent lights, do contain mercury vapor and are supposed to be recycled where you buy them. At the hardware I work at the state gave us a trash can to store the returned ones in so a state paid worker can come an pick them up when it gets 1/2 full. I figured they would come in a space suit with helmet to pick them up but they don't,,   .
Has anyone ever used refrigerant oil in their gauges instead of mercury, be careful looking at the word or you will probably go blind. Refrigerant oil is 500 weight or at least is was when I was working on auto air conditioners. Seems that would be heavy enough not to get sucked into the carb if you rev the engine.
Back to the mercury,,, how do I dare type the word,, back when I was in school we had it in our science lab and used to roll it around on the desk with our hands,, and I still have both of them, and they seem fine to me..
Ride safe

If there was an easy, safe, solution, then Motion Pro would have used it instead of switching to mechanical gauges.
The problem is that most liquids denser than water are toxic to some degree, and are regulated. Check out the chart of liquid densities HERE
Start collecting all the old mercury switches you can find, those contain a decent amount of mercury.
Yep, I used to play with mercury as a kid myself

On cars, trunk and hood lights usually have a small bulb with mercury in them that makes contact with the leads as they are opened. And most home thermostats have mercury switches in them Now don't start raiding your neighbors cars and houses collecting switches.

Old wall-thermostats, for furnaces, used big bulbs of mercury.
Red thermometers are alcohol. Silver ones are mercury.
