Airbox mod

How's this for a frankenstein stock-airbox modification?

I like it! Probably seals better than the stock filter.

How did you make it?

I was weary of the pods individual airflow characteristics, so I tried using the already-fitted airbox to make a "4into1 connection."
You just cut the old box where it narrows to fit into the battery compartment. (the drain hole is at the bottom of this area.) Get a sheet of plastic. Bolt and seal it to the hole you just made or just epoxy it and kill two birds with one stone. Bolt on the car filter adapter. Seal it. Cut a matching hole into the plastic through the adapter (otherwise it'll run much like the old airbox did).
Clamp on a car's air filter and your done. I had to lean the battery back while placing this filter, but it wasn't an issue.
All other holes (vacuum and such) can still be used. Or you can just plug them.



I'll be doing more experimenting over the off-season. I think getting the biggest hole-size adapter would help even more. I just used the 3" I already had in my garage. One that covers the entire hole that was cut out would be perfect, but I haven't seen one yet.

I like it! Did you have to adjust the carbs?

From stock, I'd imagine you'd have to do some playing.
With stage 3 jets I could feel no difference than the cheap-o pods I had on before, so the air flow must not be too far off. The plugs show no signs of running rich or lean as of yet, although I do no highway riding so I can't offer a full evaluatuion to you.

I am not sure I understand how the filter works. Does air pass through the center of the filter directly? Does air go right into the old, remaining part of the airbox? Does this same air go right into the carbs? If air doesn't pass through the filter element how does air get filtered?

Not sure if this is clear but it looks like your airbox just has a hole and the end of the filter is a hole so raw air would be drawn into the carbs without filtering? What am I missing?

The filter in the picture is tapered in the middle, but is capped just like an untapered one.

Obviously if it was just a hollow filter, it would kind of defeat the purpose of having a filter.

I just figured the tapered middle would give it a bit more airflow. You just have to use whatever sealed filter fits into the compartment.

The pic of the filter on your bike didn't show the taper down to a plug... I pictured the filter just being opened to the hole in the original air box and it wasn't clear as to how it was supposed to filter. The K&N photo helped a lot... never meant to imply you were dumb; I was just curious... thanks
