WOW!!!! was created by BoZ650
So I started my KZ650 today for the 1ST time! And all I can say is wow!!!!!It has a 4into1 pipe and pod filters.I ran it with no baffle and the sound was just awsome(Kinda made me nervous!)I just want to go back to shop and start it again just to hear it!Anyway it seems to run fine and idles good but I pulled a plug (#4)and it was black as night!!!What should I check 1st.I havent sinc the carbs yet(I dont have guages)But they have 110 mains and 17.5 pilots with the throttle valves in the middle position.Should I drop those valves back down or try to adjust the air screws out more(Currently out 1 and1/2 turns.Im new to the old kz's so this is my 1st dance with these things!

Have you checked valve clearances? Timing? You say you started it but did you drive it around? I had the exact same setup (77kz650, pods, 4-1, 110 mains, 17.5 pilots, good compression and valve clearance in spec, carbs synched) and everything checked out but my plugs were a little black and sooty but only if I idled it in the garage and didn't do any good runs. Do a search in the forums for plug chop (killing the engine while going WOT or something close and then braking to a stop and then checking plugs, rather than just running it in your garage and then checking plugs) that will give you a better plug read to determine if you have any issues.

Yeah, starting it for the first time is a good feeling isn't it? :)

On a bike that old checking the voltage at the coils would be a good thing to do. If they are reading low, do the WG coil repowering mod. You will save yourself alot of time chasing your tail trying to fix things that won't help if you have low coil voltage.

Thanks Gringo,Ive been searching for the post with the wiredgeorge coil mod for a couple weeks now.The archives im really not good with.It asks for my password and such but never lets me in.I think becuase im a new member or the nut behind the wheel could be loose!!But I intend on doing that mod anyway to make sure coils are powered up at all times. But the bike ran nice to me (maybe becuase I dont know any better)The plugs were just black.Could that be becuase I had marvel mystery oil in the cylindersfor the last six months?? Plus the motor sat outside for at least 10 years. But anyway, black plugs means rich(too much fuel?),correct??????????

Here is the link to George's website on how to do the coil mod. www.wgcarbs.com/index.php?option=com_con...view&id=12&Itemid=26

You will save yourself a lot of grief and aggravation if you just contact parts-express.com that he mentions in the article as opposed to trying to buy a relay at an auto parts store.

BoZ650,
In Archive searches you do not need to enter any password. Stein disabled all that stuff, just browse the different forums or click the magnifying glass at the top.

Don't worry about the plugs for now, your jetting sounds good for your setup. Stock is like 102.5 mains and 15's for pilots. The stock needle clip position is 4th down from the top. Once you get it running under a load and can do a plug chop then go ahead and fine tune the jetting.

Coil mod is worth it.

Nut behind the wheel? Aren't we all?

Along with the coil repowering mod, I recommend replacing the fuse box with one designed for blade type fuses. I used one from Advance Auto which cost about $3, and less than $10 with fuses. If you're doing the coil repowering mod, you'll need to add a fuse somewhere. The new fuse box has 4 slots, and my old one had 3, so this worked out great. The new fuses did more to help the running of my bike than the coil power mod did. But I suspect that if I'd done the coil power mod first, I wouldn't have noticed a difference with the new fuse box.
