I thought that the gpz1100 had the injectors mounted in the throttle bodies starting in 83....was it earlier?
thx a lot!

edit:
another major difference in the systems is that the early FI ('81 and earlier) didn't use a real throttle position sensor, just used a switch that told the "brain" when the bike was WOT. The '82 and later throttle bodies had a real TPS. The early TB's have the WOT switch on the left side, the later have the TPS on the right. This is a better reason to go with the later TBs, in my opinion. You can use an early head with later TBs, you just have to plug the injector holes in the head.

The KZ1100B1 (1981 GPz) had the injector-in-head. The KZ1100B2 (1982 GPz) had injector-in-TB.
Just to add to this:
The 80 KZ1000 Classic also had injectors mounted in the head.
The 80 Classic, the 81 GPz1100, and (I think) the 82 GPz1100 did not have proper TPS sensors, they were more of an on/off switch.
Go for 83-84 GPz1100 or 84-85 GPz750 Turbo.
Duplicate Info, pstrbrc edited his post while I was typing
I think the 82 GPz1100 had the on/off TPS also, because it used a mass air flow sensor, unlike the 83-84 models.

Never heard it called the "Z1 Special" before.
There is a MegaSquirt forum at www.cyclemadness.com/f that has become fairly active lately, if you are not posting there already then you might want to check it out.
