1/32" to 1/16" will work fine.

The reason for bench sync-ing your carbs isn't to achieve slide heights that are precisely the same; it is to get the slide heights in the middle of the idle adjust range. You can eyeball the opening as opposed to using wires. Loosen locknuts on adjusters. Screw the idle adjust in just a bit to where it is in about 2 turns or so. Then, set the openings on the slides to where they are open the same; about an eyelash open. Check to see if you can use the idle adjust to close the slides and then open them to where they are open 1/16" of an inch or so. If you have a RANGE where they open and shut and the open part can be set to about 1/16", then the bench sync was done well enough. When you set the idle speed after installing the carbs, the bike will be idling correctly with the slides open ABOUT 1/16". You will then need to set the idle mixture using either the air screws or pilot mixture screws and then sync with vacuum gauges to make all the slides the SAME RELATIVE TO ENGINE VACCUM ON YOUR BIKE FOR EACH CYLINDER.
