carb leaks
28 Aug 2007 14:24
so, after overhauling my stock carbs on my 76 z900, i cant get the float bowls to stop seeping. i used new gaskets and even tried high tack sealant but nothing seems to be working. it's a very minor leak but very irritating not to mention stinky. anybody else have this problem? advice? thanks.

I've got the same issue. I found it helps to keep the bike on the center stand instead of the side stand. I still end up cleaning engine covers every few days though

One problem I've seen on several sets of these old carbs is where previous owners have overtightened the float bowl screws and distorted the carb body - essentially pulling the corners of the float bowl mount area downwards - often a visual look will see the corners slightly bent downwards.
In cases like this, the gasket can't easily do it's job - I know a couple of customers have double-gasketed the float bowl in an attempt to stem the weeping.

I've worked on several carbs with the bent float bowl corners. I could never get the bowls to seal. I placed the bowls upside down on on open vice and lightly tapped the bottom with a hard plastic hammer. They slowly bent the corners back. They sealed after that.
Sometimes a leaking fuel pipe joint is mistaken for a float bowl gasket leak. Or leakage from a cracked or deteriorated fuel line, or loose fuel line connection.

thanks for the reply. the high tack sealant i used seems to be curing as the days go by. if it doesn't end up working i'll pull them and try to straighten them. so is it the carb bowl that gets bent or is it the carb body?

Looked to me like either or both.
Here's the link to the entire thread (which I should have furnished earlier).

heres a photo of his bike.

I am glad i get to watch it transform into a Beechin bike though. I will get to ride with it some day soon, just have to get my 750 all on order again.
I will commence to rebuilding my carbs again, this time using the spare bodies i have so the pilot (idle) jets arent frozen in place.

just looked at the carbs and lo and behold the carb body seems to have a bit of a curve at the rear mounting flange. guess ill be trying to hammer 'em back here in the near future.
