pods question

26 Aug 2007 08:58
#166403
I'm wondering what the airflow difference is between the foam air pods and the paper ones? I would like to replace the green foam ones for the chrome ones. It is for my 77 650 project(which is now running nicely)with VM24's and no mods.

1) Foam filters can be cleaned and re-oiled to be used again.
2) If you get caught riding in the rain, foam filters (if oiled properly) will repel water to some extent and help prevent them from becoming thoroughly soaked or sucking water into the carbs. Even if they do become wet/soaked, they can be dried out and re-oiled again.
3) Foam filters usually allow better airflow.

1) Once paper filters become dirty enough to restrict airflow, they should be replaced with new ones = $$$
1) Paper filters don't like water, and will either turn to mush if soaked thoroughly/long enough, or will become brittle and limit airflow when dried out.
2) Paper filter material can vary in thickness from diff manufacturers, and even between identical filters from the same (usually cheaper priced) brand, so obviously the same airflow might not be achieved when replacing them when they become dirty.

Better yet, just go with the gauze type media (like K&N) pod filters. They boast having better airflow than both the paper or foam filters do, plus last longer. Sure they're a little more expensive, but you get what you pay for.
Heck, K&N backs their filters with a million mile warranty, so you basically can't lose.

Just my 0.02 worth here, so take it for what it's worth. ;)

Well, it has the green unifilters on now, so based on the fact that for now, this is an econo-ride, any tips on oiling these as they are really dry would be most helpful.

Well I would venture to say you could just get a k&n recharge kit and follow the directions they have with them, but I am not sure if the material you have is the same. I just got my chrome pods for like $24 off ebay, so for cost equivalent, it might be better off just doing that. I'm far from an expert though... just giving you what little info I can.

the filters I am using are Unifilter foam. I'm just not sure how to oil these without over-oiling. Thanks for the input though.

If you look at suppliers, there are products specifically for foam filters. You nned the foam-safe solvent and the foam filter oil. They are usually in spray cans.

There are different products specifically for gauze filters. Don't use the products for one on the other.

UNI Filters have there own service kit especially for their foam filters. Use only their specific cleaning kit.

The cleaner isn't that important. The UNI foam filters can be cleaned with orange spray cleaner and then after dry, use UNI type (brand) spray oil. The can tells you how to apply but basically you mist; don't SOAK. Most people over-oil filters. I also believe that the UNI people tell you not to use the K&N oil. The K&N oil is heavier and doesn't work well on the foam type filters. You can find UNI oil in almost any dirt bike shop.
