GPZ1100 fuel injection retrofit into my KZ 550???

I have a 1980 KZ 550 that I am interested in converting to fuel injection. Would swapping the GPZ1100 fuel injection system be feasible for my project? Is it smart enough to compensate for an engine that is half its size? Would the throttle bodies be a direct fit in place of the carbs?

Thanks for all the help,

Kev

carb spacing is different between a 550 and a 1100.
sounds cool though.

someday i will be able to afford my kz habit.

I could just modify the throttle body setup because It should not be too hard. What do you think about the other questions?

no the computer cannot just re-map the fuel for a 550 by itself lol. You would have to buy an after market ecu such as megasquirt or vems and program your on fuel map.

What about using a ninja 600 fuel injection ecu? I would like to go mega squirt but it is a lot of money for all the parts.

The Ninja 600s are carbs I think.

You could fit smaller injectors to the 1100 system and tune from there reasonably well with fuel pressure and/or TPS setting, and you could fine tune by adding a Powercommander (instructions on my site).

Either way it's going to cost a fair bit and you have no real reason to do it, carbs work well enough.

Start by reading the MegaManual as it covers EFI in general, as well as the MegaSquirt.

The MegaSquirt EFI controller costs ~$140 in kit form, or you can make the circuit board and scrounge the parts and save a bit of money, takes longer and is a lot more work though.

There is a member on here that designed and built his own EFI controller, but he has a background in electronics.

Like Lorcan said, carbs work and are the simple solution, converting a KZ to EFI is for oddballs and masochists (like me and a very few others) :D :D

Specific answers to your questions.

The GPz1100/750 Turbo throttle bodies are entirely to large for a 550, as are the injectors, good luck trying to get any kind of decent idle out of them on your 550.

The 600 throttle bodies are even larger than the 1100/750 Turbo throttle bodies, so they would be a step backwards.
Unless you have metalworking capabilities with an interest in digital electronics it will cost you a bunch of money to convert to EFI, unless you have knowledgable friends that will help you out for free.

You could buy the 10" x 20" Atlas lathe I have for sale and make your own throttle bodies :)
