77 kz1000 jet kit was created by turbodog
I have a 77 kz1000 (see pic) that I just bought a V&H 4 into 1 for, which requires a stage III jet kit. I'm only finding stage III kits for 78-81 kz1000s. Does anyone know if these kits work on a 77 kz1000? Or where to find jet kits for a 77 kz1000?

You seem to be making a couple assumptions... V&H requires a Stage III jet kit. Why? Will a 79/80 Stage III jet kit work on your bike? Since it doesn't work well on the 79/80 VM28 carbs (jetting is wrong as is normal for the Dynajet kits), it might work on your bike better. I doubt it will, but who knows?

My suggestion is that since your bike wasn't overly lean from the factory, and since your pic shows a stock airbox, just try the V&H with your stock jetting... the 77 carbs are a tad fussy to rejet and I would think the stock jetting will be OK.

Ahhhhh, forgive my misleading pic, I want to ditch the cumbersome stock air box and replace with individuals, and the V&H ( not shown) presently has no baffle. The paperwork from the new V&H said that a stage III kit was required to obtain the pipes full potential. Now I don't believe everything I read, but it was a place to start. I greatly appreciate the advice, I know a little more now. I just want proper throttle response on take offs and in the corners, and was hoping with all the countless number of mods done to the fuel and exhaust systems on the KZ1000 over the past three decades that there would be some proven formulas that work best for my setup.

To have the exact answer would only happen in a perfect world and we all know we dont live in a perfect world.

Just bought a 1980 KZ1000 LTD in June. The bike was running very lean. My dad has owned 13 different 77-80 KZ's and is enjoying me tyring to fine tune this bike by trial and error. There are several good tutorials on carb work on the internet and KZRIDER. Unfortunatley, for you and me that the same principles that worked 30 years ago still hold true....THE PLUG TEST! The plug test lets you know exactly what your carb is doing, along with the smoke or lack thereof coming out of your exhaust.

Here is a link that has given me some general knowledge.

Exact answer? Perfect world? This post is getting out of control, I'm looking for numbers not a lecture. Originally, I was wanting to know if I could even buy a stage III jet kit for my old KZ anymore. I still don't know but that's OK. I know the KZ has got be one or the most tried and tested bikes by tuners, ever! Again, I just wanted some numbers. wiredgeorge said that the Stage III doesn't work well on 79/80 VM28s, OK- then I'm ditching that idea and ordering rebuild kits, and doing a thorough cleaning, rebuild, and mechanical sync, and see where I'm at with the individual air filters and 4 into 1 pipe. I'm probably asking for trouble by ditching the stock air box, but I can't help it, I hate that big ugly box in the way of everything. From what little research I've done, I think I'll end up replacing the 107.5 main jet with 120s main in the end. Dirty, dirty carbs....

Does anyone know what carbs came stock on the 77 KZ1000A? I thought I read somewhere that the 77 KZ1000As came with 26s, but mine measure closer to 28s, and they don't have an accelerator pump.

FYI
I have a 1978 KZ1000A2 and the K&N pods on the carbs. My exhaust is a 4 into two with packed pipes. The prior owner had the wrong size jets and it ran like crap. So, I pulled the jets and replaced them with the stock sets (both jets in all 4 carbs)
It runs better now than when the pipes were open.

Oh, and usually only changing one side (either pipes or pods) should not require a complete carb jet change.

Hope you don't feel like this is a lecture... you came on asking for help and I tried to provide some... the correct airbox/pipe info is kind of important and now that we have this info, I would guess #20 pilots, #115 main jets. If you have 5CN8 jet needles, clip to 4th slot and if you have 5DL31 jet needles clip to 3rd. This should get you real close. You have VM26SS as noted but that nomenclature was used on about 10 different assemblies that need to be jetted differently due to jet needle/needle jet and air jet combinations.

I don't feel lectured at all, I appreciate any knowledge that is helpful. It sounds good to me, I'll change the current 107.5s to 115s instead of the 120s and try the #20 pilots after I put the pipe and filters on. If you're referring to my post earlier, I had just woke up, drank my usual mean cup of joe, checked my post first thing, read about it not being a perfect world, and kind of went off, it happens. I plan on going to 28s or 29s in the future brianrae33, so I may get to try your setup. All I need is some more time, and more money, money, money!

Do you have any pics of your 77 Galaxian? Mine and every one else seems to be the Diamond Wind Red color, but I've only seen a couple pics of the Diamond Sky Blue ones.
