Carb ID was created by Bob_79KZ
Wiredgeorge: On my carbs for my 79 KZ1000 ST MkII, I find the following numbers:
On the left side: 1098
On the right side: P9 and under that 31

Does that nail down what carbs I have?

Thanks,
Bob

On those carbs, I think the 1098 is the ID mark and the other number can vary. They are the stock carbs for the shafty; both 79 and 80 I think. They are called VM28SS.

WG..I figured the P9 stood for 1979
and I figured the 31 stood for 31mm cause that's what they measure on the inside diameter of the cyl head connection. Outside dia. is 39mm which goes into the rubber carb mount.

If I looked around for a set of Constant Velocity carbs which ones should I look for? Just for cruising around, no racing...

Would CV carbs bolt up to the carb mounting plate I have now?

IF I get CV carbs...do my VM28SS's have any resale value or should I just hang onto them for door stops?

Thanks again,
Bob

Patton: I like the concept of the CV carbs. It's sort of like each carb sense's the vacuum of the cylinder its attached to and feeds the correct amount of fuel.

Hence the name, Constant Velocity. It moves the carb slides up or down depending on the vacuum it sense's.

IF I'm correct, it sounds like the way to go.

Messing with VM28SS's is a PITA...With the CV..set it and forget it...right?

The inside diameter at the engine side venturi is 28.7mm - you could probably swap the carbs for a more accurate caliper bwhahahaha

Go check our website for "CV carb installation tips". It will be in an article called BS Carb Install or something like that.. Might answer some questions.

Nope WG: I measured it 3 or 4 times. Its 31mm
on the intake side.

Hence the number 31 stamped in the right mouting
flange.

I guess its rocket science after all..:P

OK... If 31mm is it, that is it... keep in mind they never installed a 31mm carburetor on any other bike that I know of so you have a one of a kind, I guess... By the way, I have the Kaw factory specs for most all the Z and KZ models from 73 to 80 which came from their factory tech class and that would be the only 31mm carb. Anything is possible, I guess.

Yeah WG, like you said, anythings possible.

Actually I expected it to be even bigger than
31mm. But its a gas hog with the carbs it has.
Bigger would not be better I guess.

Thanks for the reply's
