Is there a compeling reason to use special float bowl screws such as these?...

or are these just in case you mash the top of them?

They are just replacement screws like the originals, they won't rust and look like nasty old rusty screws.. ;) ;)

Anybody know what size they are offhand? I wouldn't mind scoring some in stainless with torx heads. If there is such an animal.

Go allen heads instead..mine were M3xsomethingsmall. I brought one of the screws to the local bits'n'bolts shop and checked it against the metric nuts available to find the right size and thread pitch.

..easy-peasy!

Those are JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) 4x12mm with .7mm pitch. They are too short for most float bowl applications. Use 4x16mm .7mm pitch; I am sure they sell those as well. Use the 12mm long screws to hold VM series carb tops. The little dimple in the head of the screw identifies it as a JIS screw. The head IS NOT a Phillips head. This is why so many are stripped. They are called cross-point heads and need a special screwdriver to avoid stripping the heads. That is why replacements are sold; so many are stripped. I suggest buying a set of 4mm socket head (Allen head) bolts in stainless steel. The heads do not strip and they won't rust. I think www.z1enterprises.com sells these as well. I buy JIS standard screws for restorations and as OEM replacement on the BS series carbs where they are most 5mm and 6mm used. Most of our work goes out the door with stainless socket head hardware which is easier to work with and holds up better. We buy these screws by the thousand at a time. NO, we don't sell them separately...
