I think you should have #97.5 mains and use a mangafying glass to read the numbers...

My factory service manual lists the main jet for the 81 CSR as a 92.5 (for the US model) or 102.5 for the overseas model. Pilot jet is listed as a 15. Float height is listed as 23 +/- 1 mm.

Did you change the airbox/pipes? The main jet MIGHT be a #92.5 now that I think of it... I did two sets of those carbs last week and may have bumbled the number in my head.

FWIW: I think most any mains in the 90s are too darn small. I use #102.5s as a baseline for stock main jets on most all the VM24s. If you have a stock airbox, don't hesitate to go any of the 24s up to a #102.5. It is possible that your "lean" plugs are the result of the pilot or mid-range but if you have a stock airbox, I would clip the jet needle to the 4th slot if you have slots (there is some confusion about stock jetting in the various info sources on the slot) but the #15 pilot will be fine. You might want to adjust your fuel level via the service fuel level method (if you haven't already). If you have the emissions stuff still on the bike, make sure there are no leaks in that system. You would probably have either a high idle or erratic idle if the emissions stuff was compromised.
