Fuel Tank Quantity

What is the fuel tank quantity. I don't have an owners manual for it(but I'm looking for one), and I've heard that the LTD has a slightly smaller fuel tank?
I got a Pingle fuel tap for it from Z1 Enterprizes. It went on reserve at 146 miles. It took 3.6 gallons to fill up. I'm guessing I had maybe a half a gallon left in the tank. (Dim flashlight and sunny day makes it hard to see in dark holes)
I'd just like to know for sure.
It's a stock paint job, no bondo filling dents taking up fuel space.
Thanks in advance, I didn't know which area to put this thread into, so it ended up in here.

Is a Pingle tap a vacuum tap or non? The test is probably the same, but you have to add a vacuum source if it is a vacuum operated unit.
I would get a 5-gallon paint bucket for this test, and mark it at gallon increments. Fill the gas tank.
Get a long enough hose to run to the container.
Put the tap on RUN. Let the fuel run down to where it stops. Measure your volume in the container.
Put the tap to RES. Let the fuel run out, and measure your volume. Doing this testing will do a couple things.
It verifies operation of both positions.
It notifies you of fuel capacity.
It takes the guess work out of the hands and heads of those who cannot see whether your bike has a switched out gas tank, and;
It lets you know if what comes out is what you find is supposed to come out.

Thanks for the information.
PS, The Pingle is non-vacuum. Call me crazy, but I like "ON", "Off" and "Reserve". I don't like vacuum to turn it on.
PSS. No I'm not nuts, but slightly computer challenged. However it was my computer, or cyberspace that made the double post, I didn't push "enter" twice.

Glad to be of assistance. Nice to put fish in the pond once in awhile.

This board is a great reference source. Thanks to Stein and his perseverence in maintaining it. I never would have got the bugs out of my KZ without this resource.
And by the way, from your signature line, I see you have an F11 or two. Duck is needing some information, so maybe you can answer a question or two if you have the time.

F11's;
Yup, I presently have two of them, and always seem to run into them from time to time. Anything I can help with, just ask.

Wasn't me asking, but thanks.

Tank capacity of 1977 KZ1000
16.5 liters (includes 3.6 liters reserve)
4.35883 gallons (includes 0.95101 gallons reserve)
Tank capacity of 1976 KZ900 LTD
13.6 liters (includes 0.8 liters reserve)
3.59273 gallons (includes 0.21133 reserve)
On the road real life experience (1976 KZ900 LTD)
Normal highway cruising (rider and luggage).
Fill tank (not to brim - no splash over) and expect to hit reserve at about 120 miles. Perfect range -- apx 2 hrs in saddle -- time for stretch and beverage.
Reserve gives about 20 miles more. When stumbles, jump up and down on pegs to splash remaining drops to rear of tank, and eek out 2 maybe 3 more miles, then coast to station.
BTW, here's a neat easy conversion site:
