I just picked up this bike last weekend and it had been sitting for at least 6 months. When I got it home, I checked the gas in the tank and it smelled ok. I drained both carbs and that gas had turned bad, but didn’t get thick yet. Both floats were stuck and no more gas ran out after the bowls were empty (stuck floats).

After that I removed the carbs, removed the needle valves. They only had a little varnish on the needles which made them stick. I soaked them in carb cleaner, rinsed them out and reassembled. I didn’t replace any parts, just cleaned and put back.

I was able to get the bike running. It ran fair. I pulled the plugs and noticed the left cylinder was running rich and it was popping thru the exhaust on that same side. The right side looked to be ok.

The only adjustment I saw was the black thumb screw underneath and between the carbs. I’m not sure what that does, but it looks to be the idle adjustment. Is there a air/fuel mix screw that I have not found yet? I feel its close, but not quite there yet.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Steve

I did see in carb rebuild kits that there was an adjustment screw, but was not able to locate it.

The screws you refer to are located under plugs from the factory to keep folks from adjusting them. A rebuild kit contains the mixture screws, some small washers and o-rings to seal the same, a bowl gasket o-ring and a float needle. The carburetors need cleaned thoroughly and adjusted/tuned properly to make them run right. Since the only real way to clean them is to first separate them, there is a bunch of detail involved so I suggest you consider purchase of a factory service manual. I will be glad to help or answer specific questions.

Do you know the history of the bike? Was it running well before the layup? if so don't go adjusting yet. I'd look for something blocked in that left carb.
Good luck

The history on the bike is that it did run well when parked about 6 months ago. I did see the plugs you mentioned under the plugs. I do have a contact with a local motorcycle shop and may just let an expert handle the fine tuning.

I do plan to get a service manual after the first of the year. Let me know if you think it may be something else.

Im not sure if I covered the conditions of the plugs, The left one was black, and the other one looked like a normal tan color.

I pulled the carbs again last night and found that I overlooked a clogged main jet on the left side. Everthing is now back together and that unleashed a whole lot of power. The only issue left is the idle is very erratic<sp>. Sometimes it will idle normal, but then it will rev up on its own. Then I will come back down on its own again. Changing the idle adjustment does not fix this problm.

Thanks again for your help.

Look for an intake leak.

Air leaks in the manifolds will cause it to run lean and idle rough. Not having the carbs synced to each other will also cause it to run wierd. If you didn't pull the caps off and remove and clean the air mix screws and ports, they could be causing you rough idle as well. If the caps are still on, it is likely that they have never been cleaned.
