Anyone have or know where I can find this part?

I am looking for the little plastic piece that slips over the adjustment screw on the bottom of the bowl on my 26mm carbs. I am missing one and would like to find one. IIRC that's the air adjustment screw, I havent played with these carbs yet but I'm rebuilding them and a little detail like that just bugs me :)

Thanks,

Ron

Got a pic?

I know on an old Ski-Doo I used to have, there was a plastic head on one of the carb screws. It had an adjustable main jet, which was really kool for high-altitude adjustments.

I've never seen a set of 26's with a plastic head on the air-screws.

They were on some 1978 KZ650 and KZ1000 that used the pilot screw type carbs. They were a limiter that was meant for emissions reasons, to keep owners from adjusting the screws more than about 1/2 turn. All are removed and discarded by now except your 3 existing ones. :)
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Hi Ron. . .what is IIRC?

That being said, if you can't get them at the dealer, maybe Wiredgeorge might have a source for you since he does so many carburetors.

In my opionion though. . .you probably are going to have to use a sidecutter of some kind to cut the limiters off the screws so you can take out the screws. I have heard that people can use a sheet metal screw to pull the caps, but it probably ruins them. So if you plan on replacing one, you might need four. The screws are pretty soft, so if you try to pry off the caps, they bend kind of easily.

If one out of four is bugging you because of the lack of uniformity, lose the other three.

One other thing I suggest. . .look really carefully at what comes out of the tampered unit, versus the other three. . .you might find mismatched / missing parts. My .02.

IIRC = "If I recall" or "If I remember correctly"

The plastic doohickeys are limiters that allow the pilot mixture screw to be turned about 1/4 turn or so. That is why the bowls on the VM carbs with pilot mixture screws all have the castings that stick out on the sides, next to the limiter. When you remove the limiters, you generally break them. I mostly throw them out as they serve no purpose other than to limit adjustment of the pilot screws. Most later carb types recessed the pilot screws in the well and MIC and Keihin put caps over the well so you couldn't muck with the screws at all.

Hmm.. I dunno, that's about the 5th time I've had these carbs apart and I'm sure I'm not the only one to take them apart.. still have 3 unbroken parts :) I just figured it would be easier to turn with the caps on while mounted on the bike. I'll just put those 3 back on I guess. With the screws on the bottom of the carbs I thought it might be cumbersome getting a screwdriver in there, the 28's I have put the screws on the side I can reach all 4 easily.

Ron, if you are ham fisted, like some of us, and have a hard time turning those screws on the bike, go to the Motion Pro website. They sell a screwdriver for this purpose... it is a flex shaft I think with a 90 degree bend made just for getting to those pesky screws. I have a flex shaft screwdriver and it makes tuning those screws easier. Mine has been in my toolbox for awhile and I don't know what type or where it came from. One of the companies I am a dealer for (I DO NOT SELL RETAIL) call K&L supply also sells a carb adjustment "wrench". One of the tools they sell is called a:

"35-9658 Slot-type Pilot Screw Adjustment Wrench with longer tip for Kawasaki/Suzuki/Yamaha." It looks to be over a foot long with a 90 degree arm sticking up with a flat screwdriver blade made specifically for adjusting the pilot screws you have the caps on. I doubt Jeff has it online but he can order you one I suspect... www.z1enterprises.com

DOH I was just talking to Jeff yesterday too. I think I saw something similar at the auto parts store, if not I'll grab one on my next Z-1 order. That sounds pretty handy. The way I have the oil lines etc. routed the clearance under the carbs may be kind of awkward, I'm sure I can work around it but anything that makes my life easier sounds like a good idea to me. Thanks for the tip!
