Airbox
13 Mar 2007 10:00
After submitting a couple of posts on the subject, I've pretty much decided that I would like to put the airbox back on this bike. So, I got one through ebay and everything looks good on it except... There's a cone shaped piece that was rolling around on the bottom of the box. It looks like it has broken off. From the illustration in the manual I can see where it is supposed to go (the base for the element). My questions are: Is this repairable? Have any of you guys had experience with this? Should there be a nipple of some kind that goes there? Does any hose then connect to it? ETC....? The reason I decided to go with the airbox is because of the type of riding I hope to be doing someday. This, of course, is for the '81 KZ750E.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Might not help but won't hurt to mention -- recently discovered at AutoZone a two part epoxy-like product called "Plastic Weld" (or similar name) designed for bonding plastic to metal or plastic to plastic. Comes packaged in the dual-tube mode for about $5.
Working time was several minutes, but it set up pretty fast. Looks like cream colored petrified wood when cured.
Dried rock hard and noticeably stronger than Gorilla glue or other ready to use glue I've found.
Still use JB Weld on metal to metal. But the Plastic Weld is still holding (I think stronger than new) where the JB Weld quickly separated and failed in a plastic to metal situation.
Thinking this stuff might help repair the broken part.

On the 650, the cone piece sits in a hole in the bottom of the air box, then the filter on top, then the air box cap. The cone will roll aroung if not popped into the bottom. There should be a small protusion on the bottom of the cone the same size as the hole in the bottom of the box, and the cone is just push in.

Thanks. I think you answered my question as to whether or not there is a "nipple" on the bottom of the element base. Apparently that protruberant:) piece broke off in the hole. I'll try getting some of that epoxy and see if I can push that piece out and glue it onto the base. I saw a show on the Hystory Channel on adhesives, and I think it is amazing to see some of the stuff they are coming out with. I hope I can get it to work.
Thanks again!!
