boiling carb to open passageways
27 Dec 2006 06:11
Has anyone heard of boiling a carb body in gas and oil to open passageways? The right hand carb doesn't work, yet I can spray carb cleaner through the jet passageways and the carb cleaner comes out where it should. A friend suggested boiling the carb.
Any suggestions?
1981 KZ440A KEI HIN carb a CV 36 I believe. Stamped on the body - 1391 TJ21.

I've never heard of that combination but I would be pretty nervous "boiling" it

Use a carb dip, take the carb all apart, do not soak the rubber parts. Get the carb dip at any auto parts store.
Please do not boil it in gasoline and oil, I'm sure your friend misunderstood the process.
Maybe your friend was hungry at the time, and thinking about a "crab boil"

I boil them in a combination of water and lemon juice...the agitiation of the boiling water along with the acidic properties of the lemon juice works wonders....I boil them for about 15 minutes..then dunk em in some clean water to rinse then blow out with compressed air.....before and after pics......

Doesn't sound like the passageway is clogged. Am wondering about more details and description as to what "doesn't work", as the problem may be something other than a carb problem (how about the ignition, spark, timing, valve clearance, plugs, all of which should be checked before blaming the carb); but if truly a carb problem, could relate to jetting, float level, enrichener circuit, etc. Diagnosis is more difficult without more info, for example whether the subject cylinder is even firing during cranking, will the motor crank at all, etc.
BTW, thanks, uncle fester, for sharing the lemon-water boil technique and the pics.

Thanks, the pictures really looks good - I will try boiling them in water and lemon juice. What portions of water to juice?
Patton, I am sure of the ignition system working properly; timing and valves double checked; new and old plugs used. As a last resort to prove the carb problem, I pulled the pair of carbs off the engine, and mounted the left hand carb on the right hand cylinder and ran the engine only on the right cylinder. The problem with the right cylinder went away.

I also think "Patton" posted some excellent advice.
Boiling a carb in gasoline? Yer kidding, right? I wonder what could go wrong?
I've heard of boiling them in water & baking soda, then thoroughly drying them out using compressed air. Soaking them overnite or longer in carb cleaner is a typical method. One of the KZR members has stated that the NAPA product he uses leaves the carb bodies kinda polished, but I don't know the exact name or even if it's still available (it may simply be the NAPA carb cleaner). I used the Berryman's.

I gotta try the lemon boil....
I may finally have found a use for the side burner on my bbq. The wife would kill me if she caught me cooking my float bowls in the kitchen :P:P
