The top fuel bikes turned the head around simply for ease of maintenance. The blowers are positive displacement types, so you can't ram air thru them.
When Terminal Van Lines first did it, I believe they turned the cylinder and head around. This was the easy way, but it meant the chain tensioner was in front.
When Elmer did it, he did the modifications necessary to just turn the head around. When we made the billet heads for Elmer, they would only work that way. You could not put one on a conventional KZ.
