Help....I cant change gear..... was created by CHiPs
Hi guys,
My apologies if this question has been asked/resolved allready..
I have a police1000 C4.1981?
The bike has been off the road for 9 months while i waited for a friend to replace various gaskets on the engine (nine months for that you ask? its a long story:blink: )

anyway, the gear selection worked fine when i parked it up , and when I picked it up yesterday, I found it will only go into 1st gear........I cant select any others?

I'm not very mechanically-minded (i just ride'em) any thoughts?...
Thanks in advance,
Daviet

Countershaft (sprocket) has to be turning to shift to second and higher.

If you can not shift into neutral or any othe gear that may be a different story.

with some difficulty it will return to neutral...but it will not select 2nd or higher..

has this been caused by the bike lying idle for so long,or just an unfortunate coincidence?,

As Harry says the output shaft needs to rotate to select 2nd gear and above - that means the bike has to be rolling, engine running isn´t enough.

Here´s a link to a thread with some background info on the "positive neutral finder" and a pic of how it looks, at least on a 650:

Aw dang, sorry to hear that. I´m not really familiar with the big engines so I´ll leave the advice to someone who knows more than me, but it could just be a problem with the change mechanism springs/shift drum pins - if so it can be fixed from the outside, the mechanism can be accessed through the transmission cover. Did your friend change the gasket for the transmission cover too?

When the bike is running and you put it in first gear, does it try to pull away while you have the clutch pulled in, or not running and you put it in first gear and try to push it with the clutch pulled in, does it push real hard like the clutch is still engaged?

Hi,
to answer your questions...
engine running,1st gear, clutch in,bike will not move(if on centre-stand ,clutch in,rear wheel spins slowly)

engine not running,1st gear, clutch in, bike moves fairly freely.

That rules out the clutch as the problem.
What gaskets were replaced? Were the cases split?
Does the shift lever hit the case when you try to shift up?

sounds like something bent where the shifter meets the drum. its not hard to get to on the big bikes. you have to remove the shifter and probably the foot peg, then the sprocket cover, the chain and sprocket. then i think there are 6 bolts that hold the inner cover where the problem should be. i need to swap mine out if i can get to it later today ill take pics

My thoughts exactly - here´s a pic of a 650 engine with the transmission cover removed, the 1000 should be very similar:

1 is the shift shaft where your shifting lever sits, 2 is the shift mechanism arm that rotates the shift drum, 3 is the overshift limiter, 4 is the shift drum, 5 is the return spring and 6 is the output shaft. Sounds like either the pawl spring (in the circle) came off or broke, the return spring came off or broke or the shift mechanism arm got bent. As Terry says it´s not too hard to get to, can be accessed with the engine in the frame, unlike internal damage to the transmission, so let´s hope we´re right.
