Hardrock they are indeed Chrome, what kind don't know. Nickel can be used for a "backer" in the Zinc chromate plating process but doesn't shine like these as in original form. Nickel doesn't flake-off with resulting sharp shards, just disintegrates over time like chromate. I've done plenty of the 3 different styles of stud nuts over the years for these Z's. When blasting you can witness the "copper" color underneath when the chrome is blasted away. Whatever process, not a chemist, it lasted for years and hard to duplicate apparently these days. Same process was used on the rear shock dampers. Regardless, once the "whatever" coating is compromised, only a matter of time before humidity tries to reduce the metal back to it's elemental state.

My thoughts, unless you are attempting to do a total rebuild/project I would just clean it as best as you can in place. If it is not broke what needs to be fixed. I have not issue with attempts to return to brand new, but that is never actually done. It was only new once, though one can rebuild it as good as new it is not new.

I've always used #0000 steel wool on rusted chrome parts with great results. Use it with a bit of car wax as a lubricant. It will scratch aluminum and plastic so be aware of that.

These 4 outers i believe are live on the 750. Meaning there's oil pressure under these 4 outer ones.


 
No, there is no oil line under those outer nuts like there is on the two (aft) outer nuts on the 900/1000/1100 engines.

On the 650/760 heads they have the oil feed in the center outer edge of the head/barrel. At the head the lines are drilled in a "V" to get the oil to the cams. This was a improvement Kawasaki made as to not have the oil come up those rear studs.

It's super common for there to be a little weeping out of the head gasket, where the oil feed transfers from cylinder block to head.  Here is a perfect example: my bike.  11k miles at this point.  Notice all the dark oil staining?  Nothing good comes from releasing tension on the head studs on one of these engines...
