When "right side" is mentioned, we're assuming it's approx.at the 3 o'clock position in OP's pic of the clutch assy.  If the motor is spun to rotate the "right side" (currently at 3 o'clock in the pic) to 9 o'clock, the bind should then be at 9 o'clock if we understand, providing the defect is in the hub or basket.

This is a long shot - If the bind remains at 3 o'clock after rotating the clutch assy. 180 deg., the answer may be that the final drive chain is torquing the output shaft sideways due to a defective needle bearing, output shaft bearing(s) or both?

If you have a clutch release the has the plastic ramp this  Clutch Release  is a cheap upgrade.

Is that the one that has a half dozen or so ball bearings in a sleeve? Are all KZ650 release mech's of the same design?

The "later" clutch release started in 1978 on the Z1R and KZ650. 1979 and up KZ650, KZ750, and KZ1000 used the updated design.  (according to part number cross reference on partzilla).

I agree that current on line parts lists tend to show the latest part number, but I have some old parts lists that indicate the same (older part numbers) were use on the B1, B2 and B3.
The F1 list I have shows the same parts for it (1980) This list for the F2, F3 and F4 indicate that at some point in 1981 the change to the newer part happened.

Thanks gd4now, I'm not as familiar with the KZ650 so I included the info from partzilla.
