oil leaking into stator
23 Sep 2023 10:53
Hi Guys. I hope I'm explaining this right. I currently have a small oil leak on the left side cover of my bike where the stator is. If oil does get into this area, will it damage the electrical unit? Also, how do I go about fixing this leak? Any ideas would be appreciated. Bike is a 76 KZ900

The generator runs in oil.
The oil leak is usually from the rubber grommet where the wires exit the case.

I have a similar condition with my '76 750B twin. All gaskets and seals in that area have been replaced. Grommets were removed and resealed. (They appeared dry on all sides when removed) Great care was taken to seal the area where the gasket passes over the grommet. Is it possible that oil is coming through the insulation of the wires in the grommets?
Thanks for any input on this.

Yes the oil will wick through the threaded insulation. I use super glue to seal them.

Thanks for that info. Do you solvent-clean the wires before applying the super glue? And do you apply it just where the wires go through the
grommets or is it necessary to go further? I'm anxious to get this leak fixed.
Thanks,
Russ

I use choke cleaner to wash the insulation, apply the glue then ultra black silicon to seal it all up filling the outside void as well. I do it to all old or new. No leaks.

Can this method be successful treating only the outside ends of the wires? (Not removing the stator cover) I'm on my 3rd gasket trying to fix this issue and would like to avoid ruining another unless absolutely necessary.

The grommet is crushed by the cover as it is put on creating a seal. Old ones won't do that so using this method you can reuse the grommet by coating the inside and filling the cavity on the outside with ultra black silicon. To install a new grommet you have to cut and splice the wires before the grommet. I bought a used one and the grommet was still soft so I used my method and spliced the wires where they went behind the sprocket cover.
( the connectors were junk) The grommets are meant for one time use. If hard it won't seal without help. A gasket is worth not having an oily foot.

If I may add- Immersing the stator in a hot oil bath to cool it down may seem ridiculous but just look up at nearest transformer on a utility pole and that’s exactly what’s happening. Same with pad-mounts.
If the Japanese had adopted series voltage regulators instead of shunt type this wouldn’t be necessary.
But series R/R are large. But better.
