check the hoses going into the carbs as well as the T fitting.

or crack your fuel cap just in case the tank vent isn't adequate.

whatever it is ...it's affecting all of the carbs

All the fuel hoses have been changed and a new pingel petcock has been installed.

In the scheme of things, what else could affect ALL the carbs aside from the tank vent? I took the cap apart and it looked clean. Could some damage exist that I cant see? Should I buy a new cap?

Like I said, when I put the choke on, the bike runs fine. After the choke is off, it dies. Everyone around me seems to think its fuel delivery but what the heck could do that with ALL of them.

Some current pictures of the carbs and suspect bike area in question would help.

You may have to pull the carbs. Something may have gotten bent in the accident.

Have you tried running it up the street with the fuel cap open as previously suggested to rule out a venting problem??

I will try that next. I hope nothing is bent within the carbs. If that doesnt work, I will pull them.

Appreciate your advice. What are the things that could be bent, that i should be looking for? Ive never really been inside carbs before except looking at jets and and floats.

Anything that moves inside or outside the carbs.
Look for binding through the full motion of the parts.
Clean out all ports and vents.
Check slide for smooth movement.

Also, check the air filter side to make sure nothing is blocking airflow to the carbs.

What happens after the bike dies?
What does it sound like when you try to start the bike?

Make sure your throttle opens up the carbs completely when twisted with no binding.

Check your timing and points.
Are you still getting spark after it dies?
I don't want you to have to pull the carbs if you don't have to.
When it dies try to start the bike with starting fluid.

Wookie. I forgot something. whne you told me about the cap, i took it apart. It was clean. Could the cap still be damaged and not venting even though I unscrewed the the bolts in the cap, took it apart and cleaned it?

It's a process of elimination, we are assuming that there was no issues prior to the bike getting decked ?
You said that the engine bars took the impact (I guess the handlebars also) that being the case I don't understand why you think something in the carbs is bent when they have not suffered impact. The most likely cause is something which has been effected by "jarring" could be fuel related (dirt in the system - carbs unseated from their manifolds etc) or it could be an electrical connection that has been disturbed after many years of slumber (a poor connection "heats up" when current flows through it hence why when it has stood it works again)
When the bike "dies" what are they symptoms
  • Does it "cut" instantly which would suggest an electrical issue?
  • Does it "fade" gradually which would suggest a fuel issue?
