Slipping clutch low gears high rpms

Took my 78 650 on its maiden test ride. The clutch plates and springs are new, as is the cable. It's slipping at higher rpm and lever wise it seems to engage in a weird spot. The cable is tight, I've adjusted the screw in bolt according to the manual, tight then minus a quarter turn..... thoughts? Ive read that the new discs need to get oily before they start working properly. It's been ridden a total of 500m or so. Too soon?

What are you using for oil? You can't use car oil in these engines as it has too many "slip" additives for these clutches.

It's possible the clutch isn't adjusted correctly and as suggested the oil should be jaso spec for wet clutch's.
The new plates should also have at least been oiled if not soaked in the same oil prior to install as running from dry can glaze or burn out the friction plates quickly causing the slip you describe.
You problem of engagement point and slipping could be one or more of the above three.

I did soak them. What oil does everyone use? I used a dino oil, that I recall was reccomended from someone on here. I dont recall it being a motorcycle specifc oil though

I also wonder if I didnt back off the adjustment screw enough, or made it too tight.

i used castrol 10w30 dino oil i think. Ive read that if it has a green energy symbol on it, it can cause slippage

If you have the empty bottles look for a JASO/ma rating. Or it will say for wet clutch systems. I wouldn’t run the bike till you sort out the oil.

I also wonder if I didnt back off the adjustment screw enough, or made it too tight.
You only need to run the adjuster screw up lightly until you feel it touch against the pushrod.
No need to actually tighten it before backing off.
The 1/4 turn back and leaving 1/8th" slack on the cable at the lever is to allow for heat expansion of the lifter components when hot to avoid the clutch slipping.

So good news. I slacked the the clutch cable, and reset the screw adjustment while it was cold(apparently this is key also) , checked the oil, it is 10w40 non 'green' oil. so I took her out for a rip, 20 kms or so, and the slipping is gone. I also read that the new discs and new springs etc will pretty much also slip and act weird for the first 100km or so. so people say anyway

Dino oil only means so much.
Most car and truck oils for modern vehicles  have additives  that are not meant for your bike . ( Super slippery )
Remember that the bike has a common oil system for the motor, transmission , and clutch
Car motors are motor only  so the additives help out
The additives make the clutch TO  slippery.
A safe oil commonly used by a large part of this KZ community is Shell Rotella Diesel oil
Ther must be more threads on this subject here at KZR than I can count
Good Luck
Dave

Cars,Suv and vans running a dry clutch = not the same oil in the transmisson.
Bike do share the same oil in the engine and transmission (wet clutch) = JASO RATING = NO ANTI FRICTION ADDITIVE !!!
