1977 KZ750B Twin. Starter Clutch

Hi everyone.

I have a 1977 KZ750B. A few months ago, when starting the bike, it would make an awful "clack clack clack" sound ONLY when I hit the start button. Now sometimes its starts using the start button, and sometimes it just spins. Ive also noticed that it is now having trouble shifting into gear.

All of this seems to have started after I tried to adjust the clutch cable which is really tight.

Does this sound like the usual starter clutch associated with this bike, or something else? If its the starter clutch, is all i need the starter rebuild kit, and how hard is it to do?

thats definitely the starter clutch. Its not difficult to replace, however if the boss on the starter sprocket is marred you will need to source a new one or have it machined down.
As far as difficult shifts - if your clutch is not disengaging completely that could be the source of your problems. Tighten the clutch adjuster on the sprocket cover until  you feel it bottom out and back it off a quarter turn.
