KZ750... 4 into 1 exhaust?

I'm wondering if someone could quantify the benefit, if any, of swapping a 4 into 1 exhaust onto an otherwise stock KZ750? Would replacing the stock 4 into 2 yield any noticeable performance benefit? My stock exhaust is in nice condition, so I'd only replace it if there was a compelling reason to do so (beyond obviously saving a few pounds). Thanks!

The stock system is pretty nice overall. It tucks up tight under the engine, unlike 4:1 systems, which typically hang down low and can drag. It's not overly heavy, and it sounds nice. Most headers are too loud. Maybe not too loud for you, but for those subjected to the noise, it's not cool.

Yah, good point about the noise. I'm not sure I'd want it much louder.

To answer the question Delkevic has ss exhaust systems. header pipes are probably single wall & w only 1 muffler, the set would be less weight than a stock system, a reason some guys go w 4-1. a delkevic might not fit as close to the frame as a stock system, kinda hang down a bit. another option is a stock ss set from a ZR7.

Oh, a factory ZR7 exhaust is an interesting idea… probably quieter than any aftermarket 4-1. Sure to save a few pounds, do you suppose it would uncork a few ponies? I’m running under the assumption that the 4-1 configuration is inherently better than 4-2 (I guess due to scavenging effect) since all performance systems are of that type.

When restoring my 750 (rebuild thread in my signature) I bought a couple different exhaust systems. I found a NOS Supertrapp system with canister muffler setup. I've since found a NOS Supertrapp megaphone muffler assembly as well.
Supertrapp w/canister muffler = 12.5 lbs
ZR-7 system = 29 lbs
KZ750E system = 25.5 lbs
I didn't weigh the Suppertrapp w/megaphone.
I was going to use the Supertrapp but it hung down below the engine more than I like. The ZR-7 setup is stainless steel and gorgeous, but heavy. In the end, I chose to stay with the stock system and have it ceramic coated.

KZ750E system = 25.5 lbs

FYI the ZR-7 pipes won't work with your center stand, and might not work with your footpeg/hanger bracket due to the angle of the muffler.
I'm using a 4-1 because it looks cool and I like the sound, but sometime I'm gonna go back to my stock 4-2 because it looks cool and I like the sound. The peak power is somewhat higher with the 4-1 at the expense of a slight flattening of the lower range, in my experience.

Wow, I'm shocked that the ZR-7 single exhaust weighs more than the duals. Is it a catted exhaust?

I lost 12.5 lbs with the Vance and Hines over stock and it lets you keep the center stand. Losing the weight was important to me. I even took the center stand off for another 4.5 lbs I think it was. Cleaned up the look also. I can put it on in 15 sec and remove it the same. Easy to slip the pivot rod in and out but out on the road it could bite ya. Took off the turn signals, grab bar, 1 mirror, drilled the front disc and seat pan, air box vs pods, aluminum rear sprocket, run with a little under a gal in the tank etc in addition to this and it made quite the diff. Need to look it up for sure but I think around 35 to 40 lbs total.
That pipe and stand in weight alone can pick you up a bike and a half in the quarter......... or running against your friends I like to think I picked up "maybe" 3 to 5 hp. That's about what it picked up on the KZ1000 many a year ago. Kerker up 8 or so if I remember the article from Cycle world. And I gotta go with GPZ guy on the sound too and the looks even after all these years it sometimes gives me thrill up my back when I visit the garage.

I had a Delkevic system on my 750H, both with the straight pipe and the megaphone. Never got the carbs sorted while the straight pipe was on so I can't say much about performance, but even the two stroke guys here complained about the noise! Megaphone was a lot better but still too loud for a commuter - good if you're not going to start her up at 6am though.
Stock pipes on now - a lot less noise but also a bit less pull up high (6000-7000rpm). Down low the stock system is better, could never get the delkevic happy around 2000-3000rpm. To be fair I never really put much effort into sorting it cause it was good up high and I knew it would be coming off the bike.
