I need some guidance fellas. My father recently passed away and he was in the process of rebuilding his custom 1976 KZ900. The engine was bored out to a 1425 and the increase in compression blew the head gasket. I have the bike with me and I want to finish the rebuild and get the bike on the road but I don’t have much experience working on bikes. At the moment the head is removed and I have a replacement gasket. I know it needs sealed on and then the head reassembled and cams retimed but have never done a task like this myself. I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips or guidance it would be extremely appreciated.

At 1425cc i presume it is a copper head gasket.
It so then spray coat it both sides with Loctite 3020.
Build it up in several light coats and let it dry to a uniform colour then fit.
The motor should be fitted with HD cylinder studs and torqued down to 42 ft/lb
Repeat when the engine has cooled fully after the first heat cycle .

Appreciate the help. Do I need to replace the piston rings and are there metal o-rings that sit in the cylinders on this model?

The gasket face of the block should have grooves around the top of the liners with stainless or copper wire etc installed ( commonly known as piano wired or 'O' ringed ) that sits slightly proud of the surface that will bite into the copper head gasket to provide a better seal.
The actual piston rings should not need replacing if it's a fresh build or low miles and only if you have low compression, oil burning, smoking exhaust due to high mileage wear or glazed bores. etc..

When you put the cams back in place you will have to time them correctly. Best to find a book with the correct steps to follow when you do so.

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

Hardrock beat me to the punch. If you don't have a service manual by all means get one and read over the appropriate areas a couple of times. After doing so you will no doubt have further questions which is okay and will be gladly answered.
