Will a 2000 model engine fit my 1980? was created by Bstrange1300
I have found a nice reworked 2000 1000 engine from a police bike. My 1980 has had some work done to it but I have no ideal what. I know it needs rings at best but probably more. Just want to get it on the road for this season and hoping someone can tell me if I’m chasing the wrong thing or just do it

Not sure on the details, but the 2000 P bike has a J engine, and your 1980 has the previous generation KZ. I would imagine there will be issues bolting it to the frame, chain length, exhaust clearance, etc.

Maybe someone here has done the adaptation.

the j-model engines (81 and later )won't bolt into the 80 and earlier frames.

Still wondering if anyone has tried it?
Seen this? Anything is possible with the talent and resources. Worth the time and money is another story.

The later engines will go into the earlier frames but it's not a straight swap as you have to rework some of the mounts because the crankcases are slightly shorter due to the loss of the kickstarter.
Once it's in you have to marry up the electrics so you will need the ignitor box from the later model or convert to a Dyna 'S' etc.
