2nd gear can these be saved?
08 Jan 2020 05:51
I am weighing my options, these are out of a 77 LTD 1000 that I was told had low miles, well maybe , but they were hard ones :pinch:
Can they be safely cleaned up or should I search for better?
I have another tranny in a motor that I hope is in better shape and I'll be check it out this weekend but if these can be saved I would rather keep those engine parts together.
I think APE will under cut 2nd gear for around 200 bucks( if I read it right) which is fair IMO

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationUndercutting should get plenty more life out of that but $200 ???
You can get a complete procut backcut tranny with a better low gear from MRE for $434 shipped.

08 Jan 2020 10:17Yep! it's cheaper to buy that with the after market low gears and also pay the extra $150 for the billet 2nd + shipping and import duty than it is to get my own stock one cut in the UK.Street Fighter LTD wrote: That is a smokin deal for all that

Thanks Zed, very interesting, have you tried one yet?
I wonder how much difference there is over a stock one, I mean I like to put the hammer down when the time is right but most of the time I am riding with the wife pretending to be a law abiding citizen and a stock tranny is all I need.
Very tempting though

I put one in the Orient express Funny bike about five years ago.
It behaves just like stock and takes 250hp no problem.
It was $350 shipped back then opposed to £450 to get our own cut with extra for the billet second.
I'm building a Turbo Z1R for the road and am dropping one in that.
I only put up the link though to show that you can get a better deal than $200 for undercutting one pair.

I like really like the idea of dropping a fresh tranny in the bike and not having to worry about it and the price is great considering the core cost and labor plus free shipping,
I plan on calling them.
As for just getting 2nd gear undercut and calling it a day, I'm sure that they have a dedicated machine and someone that knows how to run it but if I had to do it the cost would be a lot higher then 200 bucks, the last time I had it done was around 70,000 miles ago/ 1984 and it was only $75

Good news, the trans in my spare motor is in great shape so I think I'm just going to swap it out for that one and save some bucks
The spare motor is from a untitled 77 LTD donor bike I have and is going to get a total rebuild next Winter so the plan now is to drop a fresh M.R.E trans in it at that time, I hope they don't go anywhere.
Once I get the spare motor finished I can start working on the Frankenstein
The winner!

My guess is Mike Murhdock MRE will still be doing his thing next year.
He has been in business since the 70s.
If I remember right he was the first to market air shifters .
