I would definitely measure everything before even trying it.

That looks like it might fit. When I replaced mine this summer I went OEM...figured the first one lasted 44 years so why not stick with what works? As it turned out that idler wasn't my problem so I still have the old one as a spare.
One question I would have is whether the Suzuki idler would fit under the valve cover? I know that later ones won't fit under my Z1B cover.

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

I'm wondering that too as the aftermarket ones that look alot like the Suzuki idlers say they only fit using z1 spacers. Shorter I think.

The aftermarket Liska top idlers use the early design bracket as it fits all years of cover.
You may as well buy the billet spacer blocks while your at it instead of using the ancient rubber ones which will be hard and compressed by now.
You don't need the hollow dowel when using the blocks either.

750 katana. Looks like they used the same ones in alot of Suzuki bikes from the 80s and 90s.
I think it's the same as the old gs bikes that I read could be used on kz's.

Ok I just received the Suzuki katana idler and I'm comparing them.
They look very similar. The height is pretty close and will fit under the cover.
The bolt holes are very close, will probably need to be reamed inward a bit .
T he rubber pads are a better quality and should work even with a kz idler.
Now here are the differences, the gear is larger on the kz idler but the teeth are the same.
The height is front the bottom to the gear is higher on the Suzuki idler but swapping the pads top to bottom drop it down just a bit lower than the kz idler.
Using the kz idler bolt top plate as a spacer will bring it to the correct height .
For you engine / machinest people out there if you think I should measure anything else let me know.

I ended up spending the dough and buying the liska and spacers.
The Suzuki one does look like the best quality though.
Anyone else want to try it, give me my $20.00 back and you can have it.

Re: Timing chain idler question

Quite an interesting subject here. I replaced all the timing chain gears on mine with Liska components when I did the engine work. It never crossed my mind that a part from another bike might work and save me some substantial cash which is a good thing unless you are going to run the bike hard. If the two bikes being discussed here run the same size timing chain then the gear tooth pitch should be the same correct? At that point it becomes an issue of bracket dimensions. If the brackets are pretty close in size the chain adjuster should be able to compensate for the size difference up to a point. What intrigues me is the possibility of switching out the Suzuki gear and installing a new shaft into my old Kawasaki bracket if the sizes are the same. I have a bolt holding my old OEM gear in place so it would be no big deal to make the swap. I don't know if I would want to install the Suzuki bracket and idler after reaming out the bolt holes though. A bit risky for my liking.
