Good Morning Everyone! I'm entering New territory doing this for a friend. He had a broken centrepin (15) crank turbo MTC 1428 laying around since the mid 90's that he has sat in my lap to bring back to life. Cylinder's 2and3 had enough moisture in them over the years they were not serviceable. Eric at MTC is currently re-sleeving the block. Besides the obvious stuff, any suggestions on extra ribbing in/around case crank journals or the like? This will "probably" never see a drag strip, just a bunch of street going tickets.

APE will be your friend on this build.
HD crank and cylinder studs and nuts, Center main cap needs machining and support plate , Windage tray.
I dont know what you mean by obvious but this motor will need all the drag race tricks as it will probably have as much stress or more than a dragstrip only bike.

Yes, APE is where i'm shopping for various stuff. Obvious items would be beefed-up clutch basket, welded/indexed 16pin crank(which I already have), windage tray I have, new output bearing, dogs undercut. I was referring to extra gusseting on cases, especially the thrust journal

My friends and I ran in Top Fuel / Funny Bike / and more street races than can be counted and used stock cases. Most failures were in melted pistons and over pressure
cracks in the head

No need for tying the main bearing cap to the case or any other case mods other than the cap support plate unless you plan on running nitro etc.
My 250 hp @ 30psi , 8 .1 second quarter , car tyre funny bike ( The Orient Express ) does just fine without the above mods so you are not going to need them on the street..

That's good to know, one less thing! Any suggestions on cams/valves/ head? Came to me with stock head (79-80) Stock KZ1000 cams. No port work and stock valves.

Stock cams or 83 GPZ1100 unitrack cams are good for street- set exhaust at 112 LC.
Stock head will strangle a 1428 so would benefit from porting and bigger valves especially on the exhaust side.
A fully ported early head will still restrict a 1428 though so presuming you have flat top turbo pistons a J or 83 unitrack head would be better although you will be down to 6-1 comp with those because of the larger combustion chambers but you can up the boost to compensate.
Tons of things you can do but to be honest for the street I wouldn't go bigger than 1075 for the sake of reliability and longevity if you want to spend more time riding it rather than rebuilding it.

Thank-You zed1015. Years ago I did a 1428APE big block normally aspirated for my personal 74 Z. Had the J head, bigger SS valves, Norris 501's, 13.5CR, ported, etc. I finished the engine but never put it in the frame or even started it. I got to thinking, after I came to my senses, i'll be putting a crazy fast engine in a stock Z. Sold it to a friend I grew-up with, it's still not finished. I do a lot of the 1075/1105's and can attest to their success. Streetfighter, How does a Head come to look like that!?

Agree with zed on this. And just to expand on the topic a little - back in the day I had asked Jewel Graves (builder/tuner of the Graves Motorsports turbo Kaw funnybike) about KZ engine cases. He said that they were all good-to-go; no appreciable difference between years ('73 - '80). However, once you got above 450(!) hp or so, bad things start to happen.. So, in a street turbo application - no problems. Just use the APE main bearing cap and you'll be fine.

Just thinking about your tranny setup in this motor. Sounds like you're already on top of things and I know that it's a streetbike, but might you be running an airshifter for those special occasions? If so, a billet 2nd input gear might be a good idea and cheap insurance, in the scheme of things...

Thank-You Gentlemen for the replies! Yes I was wondering about the slamming 2nd gear potential issue? No air-shift will be used on this, that I know of. Besides APE does anyone have a good used already hardened 2nd gear set?
