Exhaust gasket install

Is there a certain way the crush copper exhaust gasket should be installed? Should the smooth side go engine side or exhaust side? Or does it not matter

Doesn't really matter but it helps to use a little copper silicon to keep them in place as you're locating the pipes. Also some masking tape to keep the split collars together as you're doing it.

It probably doesn't matter, but I put the flat side against the cylinder head. my thinking is that there's more surface area on the cylinder head & the exhaust ports are probably more even than the header pipes. With a stock exhaust system, I used wheel bearing grease as a gasket adhesive to hold them in place. When installing a non-stock exhaust system, I put a little Permatex high temp red rtv on both sides of the gaskets & gave the rtv a little time to cure, then installed the exhaust but only hand tightened the nuts with a wrench snug. then tightened to spec the next day after the rtv fully cured.
