Cam restoration? was created by kzsolo
'78 KZ750 Twin. When I rebuilt the top end I check the cam heights. Three lobes were right at the service limit and the left exhaust lobe was below the service limit. I asked several Ebay sellers to tell me what the cam height specs are. Everybody tells me they can't share that info 'cuz the cams are in a warehouse somewhere. So my question is - can a cam lobe be welded up and re-machined?

If they want the sale they'll work with you or move on.

As long as the lobe isn't scored it won't hurt anything if there is a little wear. The cam to bucket/shim contact area is large and flat so any wear will be uniform across the cam. I'd be more concern if the journals are worn, either the cam or the head. You might want to try some plastigauge to check clearance.

I used the same caps with the same cams. The head I got from ebay had less miles so clearance was actually better than the old one.

I bought a set of race cams for a kz750 twin that turned out to be junk. The journals were completely pitted. Megacycle wanted to $650 to repair. If you're spending that much might as well get some decent cams on ebay and send them out for a regrind with a better profile which is what I did.

If you still need some stock cams I have quite a few laying around.

DoctoRot, I am interested in a pair of stock cams. PM me with a price. BTW - I am curious as to the profile you used. How did it change performance? Thanks.
