Just a note to say that I´m making the 81-83 KZ1000 service manual searchable, bought my bike in december and
have a Clymer manual but the Kawa service book is better.

The obvious fix is to print it but sometimes it´s better to have it digitally and just got
tired of trying to skip thru it every time to find what I´m looking for so I started this project yesterday.

Don´t know how many of you have this bike but I´ll post a link to it
when it´s done. Will have internal links from Quick reference guide to chapters and then on from chapters.

I don't understand what you're trying to do. Do you mean searchable as to search terms from the index? That manual is available as a pdf from scans.

edited while MoveOver was typing, I guess.

He's referring to making it so you can do a word search within the PDF. i.e. jump to the pages that have the word "crankshaft"

Thanks. That's what I was thinking & edited while you were typing.
Sounds like a lot of work. Won't he have to type the whole manual or is there some method to extract text from scans?

Pdf text is editable if you have the correct software to do it. A pdf carries the fonts in the background of the file. The only time it isn't is if the text has been saved as outline, i.e. a picture rather than typed text.

Thanks. I know many modern owner's manuals are editable & searchable because they were made using Adobe Acrobat or some other similar software, but every KZ manual I've seen was either xeroxed or scanned page by page as images, so the text is not searchable. I don't know if there's software that can recognize the text found in jpeg or other images.

OCR software can detect and edit text from any pdf, tif, jpeg etc. Therefore you should be able to detect text from a "picture" pdf and save it as a searchable pdf using adobe acrobat. Dont know how accurate it would be though, it would depend on the clarity of the original.

OCR means optical charcter recognition for those not in the game.

Thanks. This was years ago, but I vaguely remember reading about a scanner that could scan a document & digitally record the text, but I wasn't sure how far along technology has come since then. If the process isn't that accurate, requiring editing afterwards, then that would open a whole new can of worms, especially in regards to vehicle specs, torque values & other stuff.

I search PDF files using Edit Find command. Works for me.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

This can get a bit confusing! :)

So, firstly the Z1000 J 1981-3 Service Manual.pdf is not searchable as it is since it´s just an image scan of the manual,
so what I´m doing is a simple edit in Acrobat Pro where I add hypertext links within the document.
Means that you dan click for instance "Disassambly Engine 6" in the Quick Reference Guide and get to
that chapter - then from there click "Pickup Coil assembly - 36" and get to that specific page.
Not a big deal but saves you time when looking for something!

And of course you can printthe manual now as it is and use it the good old way,
this is just a small digital addon...

I just look up the subject in the index and then plug the page number into the element at the top of the page (see below). Ed
