Starter gear damper, is it needed? was created by MrFathead
Hey guys I've been rebuilding my kz900 for the last few months and I am getting towards the end of it. I accidentally threw out my starter gear damper, part number 92075-192 or what ever size it was. I am having trouble finding a place to buy one and I am considering just assembling it without it.

My understanding is that that gear only moves when I am using the starter motor to start the engine, so even if it wobbles a bit it can't really hurt anything and once I am running it should make no difference. Has anyone ran their bike without one of these?

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationI would not leave it out. Here's one. Ed

I wouldn't want anything unnecessarily wiggling around, especially in regards to gear or sprocket teeth meshing.

It's so annoying I can't believe I lost it haha. I will probably have to order that one you linked I will measure it up and check what size it needs. I need the bike running for the February mad max reunion so I might have to assemble it without the damper and just kick start it.

I see three different part numbers, 92075-192 / 193 / 194. In the same order, the designations 6.3T, 7.3T and 8.3T are shown. What do they signify?

I was reading about this last week. From what I remember,if you replace a certain part of the starter clutch you need to check the gap and use the appropriate spacer/washer. I think its more like a shim. Hence the 3 options.
If were talking about the same thing.

They are the thickness in millimetres,
If you don't know which one you need then buy the thickest and lap down the lip on wet and dry paper until the gear stops being pulled round by the crank.
You need just enough clearance to allow the starter gear to spin freely without drag.

Hi what's the average thickness of the damper I assume it's the steel you lap down in size if too thick

Apparently the space ranges between 6.3mm * to 8.3mm.***.  My KZ1100-A2 engine probably has a mid-range 7.3mm ** damper installed.

In the image below, the two dampers on the left measure 6.4mm, and the one on the right is 8.4mm.  These dampers may be similar on engines other than a J-model.

Note the Kawasaki *** identification detail molded into the rubber

The back flat side is metal.  IMO to reduce thickness, I would sand off material from the rubber edge which faces and rubs against the engine

No! It's the rubber lip that needs reducing.

    It's mainly for anti rattle..
If too thick the rubber lip needs reducing just enough to allow the large starter gear to free wheel /remain stationary when the engine is running.
Too tight and the crank will spin the gear anti clockwise and drive the starter motor.
