Hollow cams for the first Z1 models was created by willemZ900
Question.
I bought Z1 hollow cams on a sale, NOS never used. They are a little bit lighter than the later ones . Can they perform better because of their weight?

I seriously doubt it. Cam performance is dictated by the lobe height and profile. Maybe, just maybe, in a full race engine with super light crank and rods, and no generator, hollow cams might contribute a tiny bit to throttle response. They might also run a tad cooler, for whatever that is worth. They might also let the cam chain last four or five miles longer.

There is less weight to rotate so less (marginally) horsepower needed to move the cams. Also, the center of a shaft doesn't take up very much of the torque, so it's not really needed. That said, KHI had problems with riders breaking cams so they may have overdone it.

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.
