Valves adjusted in adjacent pairs is best. This is because both side by side valves are on the base circle. When the adjacent valve is compressed and pushing up on the camshaft it skews the cam in the journal clearance which falsely increases valve clearance by as much as .002"
The later bkg KZ manuals call for this method. Not sure about the early manual. Suzuki GS bikes are adjusted this way too and the shim and bucket GS's are LONG lasting engines (if the owner adjusts the valves anyway).

Yep. Just discussed this. I get .001" less clearance doing side-by-side valves as per the manual as compared to exhaust and intake @ TDC, or each lobe straight up from the bucket. This seems to be the position of least clearance, and therefore the best method.
