Time serts for cam cap thread repair was created by barney
Ok so i purchased time serts to repair 6 damaged exhaust cam cap retaining threads. It appears that the inserts are not designed for a fastener to be threaded all the way through. Looks like they aren't completely threaded all the way through . I wasnt aware of this . I ordered the 9.4 mm long inserts and the longest thats available is 14 mm long. Any ideas from anyone who has used these things?
Thanks
Barney

Not an expert, but I thought Time-serts had a few threads on the bottom of the insert that are not fully formed, then during install you run the "expander" through the insert and it pressed it into the wall of the hole and finish formed those threads. I know that spark plug repair Time-serts thread all the way through anyway.

I think what you want are these: www.mcmaster.com/#threaded-inserts/=1cjl9hv
It's what I use anyway... You'll need a blind tap and the tool to screw them down.

Helicoil's work fine for that application too. Key thing with cam caps is to use vice grips and press the cam down into the head before installing the cams, that way the threads are no stressed so much.

Hi, ok what do you suggest for a stripped valve cover bolt hole? And proper installation tools and technique? Thanks!

There's no problem using Helicoil style wire inserts almost anywhere on the engine as long as they are fitted correctly.
Kits are very cheap and come with tools and instructions.
Once the hole has been drilled and tapped square and true the trick is to keep constant pressure on the coil when installing it so that it doesn't skip a thread which would cause the bolt to jam when screwed in.
Also make sure the top of the helicoil is at least one thread below the surface .
At the end of the day it's all down to the competence of the person doing the work.

Hi Paul
I have never seen anything like that not threaded all the way through. I was told by a machinist that you buy an insert 3/4 the length of the width of the bolt you are using and it should be plenty, the rest passes through the insert. So a 6mm bolt would use a 9mm insert. I have always used Helicoil or similar products that come with the drill, insert wrench and an assortment of coils. Give me a call if you like.
