exhaust lock nuts

Anybody have a good source for the exhaust lock nuts for a KZ400? Can't believe they're so hard to find. One guy has a used one (yes ONE) on eBay and wants $7 for it!!!

You can get flanged nuts like that at the hardware store.

Thanks. I don't know if there's a difference, but the P/N called out for a KZ400 is 97017-014 rather than 92017-014 , and neither CMSNL nor Partzilla have this 97017-014 P/N available.
Is 92017-014 a compatible substitute for 97017-014?

I would take one to the hardware store and compare them. $.30-40 a piece or less. You can even get them in stainless. I got zinc plated ones for my Z1.

OK thanks. I wonder if you need to use thread lock though if using a flange nut instead of a lock nut?

I wouldn't use a lock nut due to the heat. A flanged nut acts the same way if it will fit. If not a nut with a lock washer.

Re: exhaust lock nuts
03 Apr 2018 08:19 - 03 Apr 2018 09:38It helps to mention exactly what motorcycle you have, which would include the year & letter/number designation.Thanks. The 1979 KZ400-B2 has the same exhaust studs as the KZ900, and they use the same exhaust holder lock nuts. 92017-014.
The earlier KZ400s appear to have the same studs, so the 92017-014 lock nuts should work.
Be sure to reference the factory service manual for installing the mufflers. The studs are only 6mm, so they don't require much torque.
I do it by hand by feel, and use my fingertips to push the wrench to snug up the nuts, instead of grabbing a fist-full of wrench to crank them down. Retorque or retighten after warming up the motorcycle, or whatever the FSM says to do.

I buy my stainless fasteners from a guy in Wisconsin on EBay that goes by Searay340 or e-mail at polarroler1@aol.com. I have had several purchases from him including making up my own list which included some authentic looking 6mm exhaust nuts (Z1) and additional 8mm for my KZ1000 and they are first rate. There are kits available for a lot of bikes but shoot him a line and you will not be disappointed.
Good luck.
